Vancouver West End, Heritage and High-Rises

The West End sits on Vancouver’s downtown peninsula between Stanley Park and Burrard Street, with English Bay at its southern edge. Until the turn of the 20th century, the area was still lightly settled. However, the 1890s brought heavy logging and the rise of grand Victorian homes for upper-income families.

That early “high-class” chapter did not last. As the city grew and streetcar lines shaped Robson, Denman, and Davie, large houses were redeveloped, converted, and replaced by apartments, setting the stage for the neighbourhood’s defining housing type. Later zoning changes in the late 1950s accelerated apartment and tower living, reshaping the West End skyline into the mix of heritage buildings, mid-century walk-ups, and high-rises that now frame daily life a short walk from downtown, the beaches, and the park.
